The Ministry of Irrigation announced that Egypt will continue its support for African countries through the implementation of several projects on the ground with the aim of serving citizens, achieving stability for the people by solving drinking water problems and protecting against flood risks, such as the cooperation between Egypt and Tanzania to build the Rufinji dam.
The ministry stated, in a statement, that a protocol for technical cooperation in the field of water resources was signed between the Ministry of Irrigation and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in Southern Sudan, which includes a project to prepare feasibility studies for the construction of the “Wu multi-purpose dam.”
The statement explained that the project is located on the Siwi River, one of the main branches of the Al-Jur River in the Bahr al-Ghazal Basin, at a distance of 9 kilometers south of Wau in southern Sudan, and aims to generate 10.40 megawatts of electricity, in addition to providing drinking water to about 500,000 people and benefiting from water in supplementary irrigation for about 30-40 thousand acres; Egypt's keenness to work towards achieving development for the people of South Sudan.
The statement indicated that the Ministry of Irrigation prepared the integrated technical and economic studies for the project with the help of experts from the National Water Research Center to prepare hydrological and hydraulic studies, survey works and contour maps of the dam site.
The Ambassador of South Sudan, Joseph Mom, confirmed that James Wani Iga, Vice President of South Sudan, is scheduled to visit Cairo in the first week of next July, at the head of a high-level delegation that includes a large number of ministers in the Government of South Sudan, to hold the meetings of the Committee shared between the two countries.
He pointed out that the committee - in which the Egyptian side will be headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly - will discuss ways to activate the memoranda of understanding and cooperation that were signed between the various ministries in the two countries.
