As an alternative to Russian energy supplies, Germany is seeking to conclude agreements with two Arab countries

The German Economy Minister will visit Qatar and the UAE to explore alternative supplies.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said today, Saturday, that he will visit Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to explore the possibility of obtaining liquefied natural gas supplies and concluding a deal related to hydrogen, in order to reduce his country's dependence on energy imports from Russia.

Russia is Germany's largest supplier of gas, according to data on the Economy Ministry's website.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Habeck has launched several initiatives to reduce Germany's dependence on Russia for energy, including large orders for non-Russian liquefied natural gas, plans to set up an LNG import terminal, and no rush to abandon coal.

"The goal is to establish a partnership in the field of hydrogen in the medium term and to put it in a political framework," Habek said before his tour.

The German minister will be accompanied by about 20 representatives of German companies, many of them from the energy sector.

The German minister also wants to discuss LNG supplies "in the short term" and "give companies that guarantee the provision of gas supplies in Germany the political framework to become independent of Russian gas, which are topics that come at the top of the political agenda despite their economic nature".
