EU agrees to phase out dependence on Russian oil and gas

Draft statement of the European summit: the plan will be implemented as soon as possible.

The draft statement of the European summit showed the agreement of the European Union countries to gradually end dependence on Russian gas and oil.

The draft statement of the summit, which will be held on March 24 and 25, stated that the plan to end dependence on oil, gas and coal from Russia would be implemented as soon as possible, and that the plan to fill gas stocks should start immediately in preparation for the upcoming winter, according to what was reported by "Reuters".

The International Energy Agency had said that Europe could reduce the import of Russian gas by more than a third within a year, and the agency announced a ten-point plan to reduce the European Union's dependence on Russian gas.

"No one has any illusions anymore," said Fatih Birol, chief executive of the International Energy Agency. "Russia's exploitation of its natural gas resources as an economic and political weapon shows Europe's urgent need to act quickly to be prepared to face the great uncertainty surrounding Russian gas supplies for the coming winter".

The European Union imported 155 billion cubic meters of Russian gas last year, of which pipelines accounted for more than 90%, and Russian gas accounted for 45% of the EU's gas imports, and about 40% of its consumption.
