The Kremlin: We have no plans to use nuclear bombs in Ukraine

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov: We have a security concept that states very clearly that only when there is a threat to the existence of the state in our country can we use nuclear weapons.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia has no plans to use nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine.

"No one is thinking about using or even about the idea of using a nuclear weapon," Peskov said in an interview with the US public broadcaster (PBS) yesterday (Monday).

Our military operation will be completed

He continued, "We have no doubt that all the objectives of our special military operation in Ukraine will be completed. We have no doubt about that."

"But of course any result of the operation is not a reason to use a nuclear weapon," he added.

"We have a security concept that states very clearly that only when there is a threat to the existence of the state in our country, we can use nuclear weapons and we will actually use them to eliminate the threat," Peskov explained.

He continued, "Let's keep these two things separate, I mean the presence of the state and the special military operation in Ukraine. They have nothing to do with each other."

Concerns heightened in the West when President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia's nuclear forces to be put on alert at the start of an armed attack on Ukraine and warned that countries that would intervene in the conflict would have to calculate the consequences "as they've never seen before."
