Zelensky to NATO: Give us fighters, tanks and air defense systems

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked NATO for better fighters, tanks, air defense systems and anti-ship weapons to help his country stand up to a Russian attack.

In a pre-video address to the NATO summit, on Thursday, Zelensky appealed to the leaders of the alliance to increase military support to his country in the face of Russian forces, warning that "its next target will be members of the alliance in eastern Europe such as Poland."

Zelensky added that Russia "want to go further. Against eastern members of NATO. The Baltic states. And of course Poland."

"But NATO has not yet shown what it can do to save people," he added.

The Ukrainian president also accused Russia of using phosphorous bombs in the month-old war, but did not provide evidence.

In another speech to Swedish parliament members via video link, Zelensky said that Ukraine is fighting for the security of all of Europe and should get full membership in the European Union.

"We are not just fighting for the people of Ukraine, but for the security of Europe, and we have shown that we deserve full membership in the European Union," he added.

Zelensky called on Sweden to help rebuild his country, saying: "A month has passed now. We haven't seen such destruction since World War II."

And the Ukrainian president continued: "Just look at what the Russian army has done to our country. A month of bombing, similar to what we witnessed in Syria. 10 million people have been displaced."

Zelensky, speaking through an interpreter, sounded the alarm about Russia's possible use of nuclear and chemical weapons.
