Twitter is testing shopping reminders for upcoming products

Twitter is testing shopping reminders for upcoming products

Twitter is ramping up its focus on e-commerce features with a new shopping feature. The micro-blogging platform has begun testing a new feature called Product Drop that will remind users of upcoming features being rolled out across the platform.

Twitter says: When a merchant tweets about an upcoming launch, interested buyers see a reminder button at the bottom of the tweet and can request a one-click reminder with Product Drops. Interested buyers receive on launch day, the day the product arrives, an in-app notification in the Alerts tab 15 minutes before delivery time. When they click on the notification, they see a website shopping button to purchase the item via the merchant's website.

To make the overall experience faster and hassle-free for shoppers, the platform displays a product detail page that contains all the information related to the product.

This includes the price, images, product description, and a clickable hashtag that shows shoppers what other shoppers on Twitter are saying about the product. This page also appears right before shoppers click the reminder button to request a product reminder.

The company says the idea behind introducing the Product Drop feature is for shoppers to stay on top of the releases that matter most to them and for merchants to interact with shoppers in more ways.

Tweets about upcoming products work like other Tweets across the platform and can be liked, retweeted, bookmarked and shared.

In terms of availability, the platform says it is testing the feature for US shoppers who use English Twitter on iOS.

The company has also partnered with select brands for the same thing. The list includes Dior, Fossil x Jeff Staples, Home Depot, Lego and Union Los Angeles.

The company is expected to expand the availability of this feature to more geographic areas. Plus more US brands.

He mentions Product Drops isn't the only ecommerce-focused feature that Twitter has been testing lately.

In March of this year, the company introduced a feature called Twitter Stores. This feature allows merchants to select a selection of up to 50 products to display to shoppers across the platform.

The feature also includes a View Store button that takes interested buyers to the merchant's store so they can shop for various products.

Product Drops on Twitter are similar to tools found on other platforms such as Instagram. Brands Instagram previews upcoming products and customers can set up reminders.

Twitter does not focus on e-commerce as much as Instagram focuses on e-commerce, where an entire tab is devoted to shopping. But shoppers discuss the upcoming releases on Twitter.
