The White House spokeswoman announced Friday that the United States, after the renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia, will send its special envoy to this country to appeal to "all parties" to stop the fighting.
Karen Jean-Pierre said that "Mike Hammer, the envoy of the US president, will travel to Ethiopia at the weekend" to stress the need for "all parties to stop military operations and start peace negotiations."
She also affirmed, "We deplore Eritrea's return to the conflict and the continued offensive of the Tigray People's Liberation Front on Tigray and the Ethiopian government's air strikes," calling for the resumption of humanitarian operations.
After a 5-month truce
After a five-month truce, fighting renewed on August 24 around the far south-east of Tigray between the Ethiopian federal government and the rebel authorities in Tigray, who have been facing each other since November 2020 and accusing each other of causing renewed fighting.
During the previous round of fighting, the Eritrean forces supported the Ethiopian army, and the Eritrean military was accused of committing several violations.
The international community abounds in calls to stop the fighting, but they have not been heeded. Hopes for negotiations that emerged in June have faded.
