North Korea fired a projectile suspected of being a ballistic missile into the sea on Thursday, the armed forces of South Korea and Japan said.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff has not yet determined whether the weapon used in the launch was a ballistic, or how far it flew.
Japan's Defense Ministry and Prime Minister's Office said North Korea had launched a possible ballistic missile, the Associated Press reported.
This is the 12th round of weapons launches by North Korea this year, and comes after it fired suspected artillery pieces into the sea on Sunday.
Experts said North Korea's unusually fast pace of testing activity underscores its dual goal of developing its weapons and putting pressure on Washington over the severely frozen nuclear negotiations.
North Korea has conducted two tests near its capital in recent weeks, which the US and South Korean militaries later evaluated as containing components of North Korea's largest ICBM, the "Hwasong-17".
