Fire kills 11 babies, topples Senegal's health minister

Senegalese President Macky Salal today dismissed Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, after 11 children died in a fire that broke out in a hospital's neonatal ward.

According to a government decree, Marie Noujoum Ndiaye, Under-Secretary-General of the Ministry, will replace the dismissed minister.

On Wednesday, 11 infants were killed in a fire that broke out in a hospital in the city of Tifwani in western Senegal, according to the country's President Macky Sall.

"It is with great sadness and dismay that I have just learned that 11 infants have died in a fire in the neonatal ward of Tiffawani General Hospital," Sall said on Twitter.

"I offer my deepest condolences to their mothers and families," he added.

For his part, Demba Diop, the city's mayor, announced that "three babies were rescued."

According to Doub, who is also a deputy in the National Assembly, "the fire was caused by electrical friction and the fire spread very quickly."
