Fires break out in the forests of southern Lebanon due to border clashes

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Thursday that it is working with the Lebanese authorities to extinguish forest fires that broke out in southern Lebanon, due to an exchange of fire across the Lebanese-Israeli border, according to what was reported by Reuters.

UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti added to Reuters that the Lebanese Civil Defense firefighting teams were working to extinguish the fire, and that the strong winds and heat wave, in addition to the minefields, increased the risk of the fires spreading.

He explained, "These fires also occur in minefields, which makes putting them out more complicated," and that although the fires affected uninhabited areas so far, they are close to border villages and olive groves.
