Protesters against the Gaza war close Grand Central Station in New York

The New York City Transportation Authority said that hundreds of demonstrators demanding a ceasefire between the Israeli occupation state and the Palestinian resistance closed Grand Central Station, one of the city's main transportation hubs, according to the New York Times.

“Grand Central Station is closed until further notice due to a protest,” the transportation authority said on its website, urging passengers to use alternative stations and take into account increased transfer times.

One of the banners raised inside the building read: “Mourn for the dead, and fight with all might for the living.”

The protest disrupted the journey of thousands of people trying to take trains home, and police tried in vain to close the entrances to Grand Central, then stood and watched as the protesters took control of the main concourse.

By 7 p.m., with hundreds of protesters still in the center, the police asked people to leave and began arresting dozens. Shortly after, they announced that they would not allow anyone into the hall and had designated two exit-only entrances.
